What is Reiki?

Dr Mikao Usui

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a system of natural healing which was developed in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 1900s.  Dr Usui developed this healing system from ancient teaching after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student, attuning them to the Reiki energy.

Reiki is a non-invasive therapy, using energy flow from the Reiki practitioner’s hands, when placed on or near the recipient.  Reiki means “universal life energy”, the vital energy around and within all living things.  Anyone can benefit from Reiki as it covers a range of conditions but it should not be regarded as a cure. Animals can also benefit from a Reiki treatment, and can thoroughly enjoy the experience of the Reiki energy.  Reiki can complement and enhance other forms of treatment. However, as with all forms of complementary therapy, a full consultation is required.

What happens during a Reiki Treatment?

A full body treatment can last for either 30 or 60 minutes. There is no need to remove any clothing for a treatment, as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts and can be used to treat the whole body or localised to a specific part of the body. You will remain fully clothed and simply lie on the therapy couch and relax. If you are unable to lie down, the treatment can be given in a sitting position. The main thing is that you are as comfortable as possible.

Her hands will remain in each position for up to three minutes before moving to the next position. The practitioner may be guided by her intuition to guide movements to areas that need attention. You may feel warmth, tingling and deep relaxation. As the body becomes so relaxed, it is not uncommon for the recipient to fall asleep!

After your treatment

After your treatment, you may feel deeply relaxed. As Reiki is used to stimulate natural re-balancing, it is advisable to rest and enjoy the overall sense of well being. Any tiredness or lack of concentration will soon pass. Your sleep pattern may improve, becoming heavier. If it becomes disturbed, it will quickly settle.  Drink plenty of water – this will help to flush away toxins. Try to avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 24 hours. If you have any queries, do ask your Reiki practitioner for advice.
