History

Manx Bach Flower Remedies - Dr Edward Bach Dr Edward Bach, is the creator of Bach Flower Remedies. He was born in a village called Moseley, just outside Birmingham in 1886. His family came from Wales, and his father owned a Brass Foundry.  He worked at the foundry for a while, but he had always felt his vocation was in healing and so he left to study medicine, qualifying in 1912.  He was a bacteriologist, pathologist, homeopath and respected Harley Street Doctor.

His years spent in medical practice convinced Dr Bach that emotions are the key to health and well being. He came to the belief that a person’s negative emotional state was often the prime reason for their troubles and disease, and if this negative state could be helped, the health of his patients could improve. His patients would be in a better emotional state to manage any challenges in life with calm and a positive attitude.

Bach started researching the healing properties of flowers in 1928. The results he found were so promising that in 1930's he left his highly respected and successful Harley Street practice, determined to devote the rest of his life to his new system of medicine that he knew could be found in nature.  During the early 1930’s he travelled all over the southern half of Britain, from Wales to East Anglia, developing the 38 remedies naturally from flowers. Each remedy treated a specific type of emotional imbalance,  and used in combination they could be beneficial to a wide range of patients.

In 1934 Dr Bach moved to Mount Vernon in Oxfordshire. This provided a permanent base to live and work. Here, he completed his life’s work and passed away peacefully on November 27th, 1936. This gentle man had found 38 remedies, each aimed at a different state of mind or personality type, and with these remedies he could treat all possible states of mind. His original system has never been added to and has proved, just as he predicted, flexible enough, even in today’s difficult, unpredictable times to meet the needs of everyone who has come to use them. He often referred to them as the medicine of the future and indeed, his wonderful legacy is a complete system of natural, self-help medicine that is now used with increasing popularity, all over the world.

The Remedies

There are 38 remedies. 37 of them are made from a single flower or plant; one is prepared from natural unspoilt healing spring water. Each remedy helps with a certain mood, or way we behave, for example, with fear, loneliness, worry, anxiety, depression, difficulties in making decisions. They can also be helpful with the challenges we face in life – changes such as moving house, having children, stages in life, stress at work, bereavement, illness and so on.  The result of taking a remedy is to give courage, increase our confidence, quiet the worrying mind and to bring us focus and clarity of thought. They empower us to support ourselves through difficult times in our lives and to help us develop our positive strengths.

You may have noticed that we do not all react in the same way to events – there are those who struggle on, those who simply give up hope, some feel very lonely and afraid and others bottle everything up inside. So, when choosing remedies, it is important to consider how we actually feel about our circumstances, and that will lead us to the right remedies to help. The remedies can be taken singly or in a mixture of up to 7 at once.

The remedies only take into account physical symptoms in terms of the effect they have on your emotions. Dr Bach believed that when the emotions are restored once more to balance, then the body is supported to enable its own healing mechanisms to work effectively. Most Doctors now accept the link between stress and emotional imbalances can contribute anything up to 95% of all disease.  Recent research looking at the effect of emotions on the immune system have brought positive results indicating that people with high anxiety levels had less effective protection from antibodies and immune cells. This runs in line with Dr Bach’s holistic beliefs that lack of harmony in the mental or spiritual area will lead eventually to physical illness.

This is exactly where the Bach Flower Remedies fit in. They are a simple, natural and effective system of medicine, available to everyone. They are absolutely safe to use alongside any allopathic medication* and will support any other treatments you may be undertaking.  They can be taken by anybody of any age, from babies to the elderly. They are also gentle and extremely effective for all animals and can help many issues, for example behavioural problems, aggression, anxieties to name but a few.

Bach Flower Remedies have been used throughout the world with great success by the medical profession, complementary health practitioners and families.
